The glowing phone screen taunted her, the numbers flashing as she tapped the home button and the screen lit up: 7:03 PM. Angelica Yutaya sighed softly to herself as she leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes in exasperation. The sinking feeling in her stomach only confirmed what she already knew. He was supposed to be here an hour ago, and he hadn't even called or texted or anything. He wasn't coming; of course he wasn't.
"Miss? Are you ready to order?" a soft voice prompted. Jolted out of her thoughts, the flame-haired girl brought her glassy eyes up from the menu that was still sprawled out on the restaurant table to the young woman standing beside the table expectantly. It was the same waitress that had been coming by every twenty minutes or so, and Anna could see the sympathy and pity that shone in her eyes. Anna couldn't help but look away.
"Sorry, not yet. I... I'm waiting for someone," Anna replied, her voice tightening as she forced out the same response she had been repeating over and over. The waitress nodded understandingly at the nineteen-year-old, offering Anna a small smile.
"No worries," the waitress stated before turning and walking away towards another table. Anna sighed again to herself quietly, letting her head slump back down as she returned her vacant gaze to the menu that she had practically memorized already.

Seth Orion had been sitting at his table for about twenty minutes now. He often came to this particular place every week or so, as he absolutely loved the burgers. However, something was different this week compared to all the others in the past. This time, there seemed to be a bit of a commotion at the table near the window.
There, a girl around his own age sat at a place set for two. Unfortunately, it looked like she had been there for a while, as her water glass and eyes were both empty. The fact of the matter was that the restaurant had recently become a hot place for dates around town. For Seth, this place had been his secret dining excursion since freshman year, but in recent times, there was a huge influx of couples frequenting the little joint. Seth had seen his fair share of stood-up loners, but something about this girl really made him sad. The look in her eyes was something that he couldn't describe, but it was so familiar to him. A look of defeated understanding - an emotion that signaled the very end of realization.
The thing that really got to him was the way the female waitress was looking at her. The pity in her eyes - something needed to be done about it. The entire restaurant was sending the girl uncomfortable glances and it was driving Seth mad.
Before he knew what he was doing, Seth was strolling over to the girl's table. Soon enough, he slid into the chair meant for some other boy and touched the girl's hand softly. "I'm terribly sorry, babe," Seth said rather loudly. "Traffic was terrible for date night." Seeing the lack of understanding and terror in the girl's eyes, Seth gave her a small wink as the waitress quickly scurried off to get him a glass of water. "Just go with it," he whispered. "Whoever stood you up is a dick. I'm Seth Orion - I go to the college around the area." With his easy conversation, Seth could see the girl visibly relax when he explained himself. "What's your name? I don't think I've seen you around before."

Yet another voice interrupted Anna's thoughts, and her head shot up, confusion written plainly on her face as she blinked at the boy with the dark-blue hair standing in front of her. She didn't even know him, and now, he was pretending to be her boyfriend? As he sat down on the opposite side of the table from her, shooting her a wink and a grin, Anna stayed as she was, her chocolate-brown eyes watching him curiously. It wasn't until he began to explain himself, his voice a soothing murmur, that Anna began to become less tense.
"I'm Angelica... Angelica Yutaya, Anna for short. I go to the college nearby as well," the nineteen-year-old mumbled in introduction, offering a small smile as she nodded to Seth. "Thank you, by the way. I really didn't know what to do..."
After all, Anna had never gotten stood up before. She hadn't really dated before her current boyfriend, Ethan, had asked her out a few weeks before the school year had started, and she really couldn't understand why Ethan had just left her hanging. He had called her just this afternoon, confirming that they were still on for the date and complaining a bit about some assignment. What had gone wrong in the few hours since then? Had she done something wrong?
"Are you two ready to order?" The waitress from before interrupted Anna's thoughts yet again as she set down a glass of water in front of Seth and pulled out a pen and notepad. Anna nodded to Seth, signaling for him to order first.

"Not a problem at all," Seth replied to his new date. The more he examined her, the more Seth decided that Anna was much prettier with a smile on her face. It made him somewhat proud that he had been the cause of it. When the waitress came to take their order, Seth turned his attention away from Anna to reply. "I'd like the house burger with a side of fries, please." Normally, this would be when Seth would give his characteristic wink to the female waiter, but something about Anna's presence made him focus his attention away.
After hearing that Anna went to the local college as well, Seth's interest perked even more. He didn't really listen when she placed her own order, but rather, he racked his mind of how he could have missed Anna on campus. He himself was in a Biology major, but he had never seen Anna in any of his classes. He was sure he would have noticed her if she had.
When the waitress walked away to place their orders to the chef, Seth tilted his head. "So, what grade are you in?" he wondered aloud. "And what's your major. I haven't seen you around at all." Seth grinned with his next sentence. "I definitely would have noticed someone like you."
The more time he spent in Anna's presence, the more Seth began to realize that she was definitely something special. Seth had dated his fair share of girls, with flings on top of that number. However, none of them had the sort of aura that Anna had. It was innocent yet wise, open yet mysterious. As he listened to this girl, Seth found himself genuinely curious about her as a person - something that he vowed to ignore with most girls.
The thing was that Seth had always closed himself off to the potential of romantic interest. He was simply there for the fun and allure, not the meaningful relationships that could become. After his own fucked-up childhood, his capacity to trust and give himself to other people was completely destroyed. The only other person he truly cared about was his little sister, a couple of years younger than him. She was the only girl in his life that meant anything, but the more that Seth listened to Anna and learned about her story, he unconsciously let down his sky-high walls a fraction of an inch. Anna was someone special, that's for sure. Now that Seth had a glimpse of what was inside, he was ever more interested in who Anna really was.

"I'll take the spaghetti with meatballs. Thanks!" Anna responded after Seth had finished his own order, a somewhat shy smile gracing her face. The waitress offered a polite smile in response before jotting down the order and walking off. Anna turned back to face Seth when she heard him begin to speak.
"Oh, I'm a sophomore, majoring in Law," she replied, a faint blush staining her cheeks at Seth's unexpected compliment as she looked away. "How about you?"
As Anna waited for Seth's response, she took the opportunity to look him over. The first thought that jumped to her mind was that he was attractive... very attractive. With his tousled dark hair and twinkling azure eyes, he had the stereotypical "bad boy" look that girls tended to fall head-over-heels for. Of course, those "bad boys" usually ended up with broken hearts following them wherever they went. However, the smile on Seth's face seemed so genuine, so sweet. Anna had trouble believing that he was one of those playboys.
The sound of Anna's cell phone going off pulled the girl out of her reverie. With one glance at the screen, Anna bit her lip, looking uncomfortable as she mumbled, "Sorry, Seth, but I have to take this call. I'll be right back." Wordlessly, she picked up the phone, slipping out of her seat and outside the restaurant before she tapped at the phone a few times, bringing it up to her ear.
"Hello? Did you need something?" Anna's cold tone shocked even herself as she snapped at her boyfriend, an expression of annoyance settling on her face.
"Hey, Anna. Um, look, I'm really sorry about tod-" Ethan began before his girlfriend cut him off.
"You're sorry. Right. You couldn't have texted me or called me an hour ago and told me that? I was waiting for you for an entire hour. Everyone was staring at me, and all you have to say is a simple 'sorry'? That's not going to cut it, Ethan!" Anna growled into the phone, leaning back against the restaurant wall for support. "I... I honestly can't believe you."
"Listen, Anna. I'm really sorry. I really am... but..." Ethan trailed off, and Anna heard him sigh, cursing under his breath.
"But what? What's your excuse?" she barked, her eyes flashing as she shoved a lock of her orange hair out of her eyes. There was a moment of silence before she heard her boyfriend curse again.
"I... this isn't working out, Anna. It's... it's over. We can't be together. I'm sorry," Ethan replied simply.
"Wait, what? Ethan?" Anna stammered, all of her anger evaporating into shock as she heard Ethan's words ring through the cell phone. Was he breaking up with her? "Ethan!" Her voice was met with cold silence. He had hung up on her. What the hell had just happened?
The girl slid to the ground, clutching her phone in her right hand so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. She felt dizzy, and a single tear trickled down her cheek. Why had he broken up with her? What had she done wrong? They had been so close. Even before Ethan had asked her out, the two had been close friends; they'd been close friends since high school, as a matter of fact. How had everything fallen to pieces so quickly?
Anna knew that she should get up and go back into the restaurant to find Seth, but she was just so confused and exhausted from everything that had happened today. She had gotten stood up by her boyfriend, the same boyfriend who had just broken up with her over the phone with hardly any explanation. Letting her phone drop to the ground beside her, Anna hugged her knees to her chest, silently letting her tears fall.

Seth sat patiently at the table, waiting for Anna to return. While she was outside, his thoughts began to drift back to their conversation. So she's majoring in Law? he thought to himself. That in itself was very impressive to him. Most girls that he knew didn't have the drive to aim for such a prestigious profession. That sort of major took time, effort, and dedication - which the girls definitely lacked. In fact, Seth knew that they'd much rather spend their off-hours flirting and partying. For some reason, Seth really doubted that Anna was that type of girl.
It soon came to his attention that Anna had been outside for a while on the phone. He frowned slightly, unsure if she was okay. He had only spent a little while with her, yet this feeling of protectiveness came over him whenever he thought of Anna. Eventually, his curiosity and worry peaked to the point where Seth felt the need to check on his "date." Walking outside, he looked around for Anna, wondering where she went.
That was when a small sniffle caught his ear from the right side of the restaurant. There, Anna was slumped down, tears dripped from her glassy brown eyes. Seth felt his own eyes widening as well. What kind of call would make her cry like that? A rush of anger came over him when he thought of someone upsetting Anna to that point. Quickly, he strolled over to her and leaned down to wipe the tears from her cheeks. "Hey there, bright eyes," he murmered. "I didn't think this date was that bad?"
In one swift motion, he pulled Anna to her feet beside him. "How about we ditch this place? I know somewhere that would take your mind off things," Seth whispered. "I'll go pay for our food and then I'll drive you over there. My treat," he promised.
With that, Seth sat Anna down on a bench outside and quickly went back into the restaurant to pay for their food. As he paid, a thought crossed his mind. What is it about this girl that makes me feel so riled up? I've never gotten this protective over a few tears - what makes Anna so special?
It was true. The only girl that Seth went out of his way for was his sister. All his other flings were of little importance to him. The idea of Anna's pull frightened him slightly, but the need to see her smile overpowered his instinct. Something about her. Something about Anna is new, it's fragile. Whatever that is, I can't turn back now. It makes me feel - it makes me feel alive, somehow. In this girl, I can see a better tomorrow.
